About ‘The Wickers’ Coterie Group
A coterie is an exclusive group of people who associate closely for a common purpose. Coterie groups are associated with many sports clubs in Australia and operate independently as supporter-based groups. There is a growing number of coteries associated with hockey clubs in Victoria.
The formation of a coterie associated with the Brunswick Hockey Club Inc was floated as an idea in 2018 among the Club’s life members and past players. With enough support received, the Brunswick Hockey Club Coterie Social Club Inc, known as the “The Wickers”, was formed.
“The Wickers” first fundraising event was arranged for May 2018. It was a boxing themed evening featuring two Australian boxing legends, Barry Michael and Lester Ellis reminiscing about their World Title fight at Melbourne’s Festival Hall in 1985. A full house at the Wylie Clubrooms raised funds to kick start the Coterie.
In 2019 the Coterie was formalised as an incorporated association under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 with 25 members signing on for its inaugural year. This means that the Coterie is a legal entity separate from the Brunswick Hockey Club Inc with its own office bearers and bank account.
“The Wickers” are made up of men and women from all walks of life that join together in a spirit of camaraderie and all share the common bond of supporting the Brunswick Hockey Club Inc to help it prosper and be successful. Life members, past players, supporters, businesspeople and parents of our juniors are welcome to join.
“The Wickers” get together at several social functions each year both away and at the Club. Functions include, Golf Days, Horse Racing Nights, Legends Games Sports Nights and Winery & Brewery Tours. Suggestions on other suitable functions are always welcome. Come and join us and be part of “The Wickers”.
